Dubois Russell Shoemake

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dubois Russell Shoemake, who entered eternal rest on January 29, 2025, at the age of 87. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Dubois lived a life of faith, love, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Dubois was born on October 7, 1937, to Jessie Edward Russell and Lavert "Mue" Russell, who instilled in her the values of hard work, compassion, and resilience. She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as siblings Brigadier General Gerald Edward Russell and spouse Nina Merle, Gwendolyn Steverson and spouse Luther Steverson, and Jerry Franklin Russell and spouse Margaret Russell, all of whom she cherished deeply. She is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Thomas Glen Shoemake Sr., whose partnership and love were the foundation of her life. Together, they built a loving home filled with warmth, faith, and cherished traditions. She was a proud and loving mother to Thomas Glen Shoemake Jr. and Keith Russell Shoemake, whose lives were forever enriched by her wisdom and guidance, mostly while shelling butter beans and peas on the front porch teaching about God and the bible. Her greatest joy came from her role as a grandmother to John Philipp Shoemake, Heidi Shoemake, Melia Boykin, and Tommy Boykin, and as a great-grandmother to Gavin Lee and Aisley Spell. Her love for her family was boundless, and she leaves behind a legacy of devotion, encouragement, and selflessness. Dubois is also survived by her dear sister, Ava Spell, and brother-in-law, Charles Spell, as well as her cherished sisters-in-law, Elaine Mills and Ruth Bradley. She held a deep love for her extended family and was a pillar of strength and support to all who knew her. A woman of deep and abiding faith, Dubois devoted her life to serving the Lord and sharing His love with those around her. She was a faithful member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church (Springs of Praise), where she found joy in worship, fellowship, and acts of service. Her faith guided her in every aspect of her life, and she lived each day with grace, humility, and a heart full of gratitude. Whether through teaching, comforting those in need, or offering prayers and encouragement, she was a beacon of Christ’s love, always pointing others toward Him. For many years she witnessed at the Copiah County Detention Center every Tuesday night as well as monthly trips to Parchman to witness. Her office was always open to the staff and students at Ms Job Corp where many lives were affected. She loved working in the yard growing all types of flowers, all the while praying over not only them, but everyone she could think of. She especially loved any that were red. Throughout her life, Dubois was known for her generous heart, steadfast faith, and the outspoken strength she carried in all that she did. She was a woman of great character, always putting others before herself and embodying the values of Christ, kindness, integrity, and perseverance. Whether through a warm embrace, a kind word, or a helping hand, she made an impact on countless lives. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 3rd, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Springs of Praise in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. A service to celebrate Dubois Russell Shoemake’s life will be held at Springs of Praise in Crystal Springs, Mississippi on Tuesday, February 4th, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the memory of a woman who was truly one of a kind. Though she is no longer with us in body, Dubois’s spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her. Her unwavering faith assures us that she is now in the presence of her Savior, rejoicing in the eternal peace and glory of Heaven.
