Gloria Kay Addie

On Saturday June 20th 2026 Kay Addie peacefully entered her eternal rest. She died at home surrounded by the love of her husband Bill and her son John. Kay was predeceased by her parents Fern Watt Carter and Garland Gay Carter Sr., her sister Margaret Carter Blackwell and her nephew Harris Blackwell. She is survived by her loving husband William Addie, her children Margaret Swyka and husband Leon, John Addie and wife Debbie, Raymond Addie and wife Elena. Sister Sara Swinney, brother Garland Gay Carter Jr. and wife Wavelon, nieces Sarah Kay Kilgore and Peggy Davide, nephews Carter Swinney, Johnny Carter, Andy Carter, Thomas Carter. Grandchildren Ashley Jackowski and husband Nicholas, Loren Ballard and husband Brynell, Samantha Addie, Brittany Wasser and husband Anthony, Timothy Addie, Derek Joyce, Savana Addie, Elizabeth Addie, Victor Addie and great grandchildren Ariana, Brielle, Jeaden, Amyah, Luis, Eloise and Adalyn. Kay, along with her twin brother Gay, were born 11/19/41 on a dairy farm in Kosciusko Mississippi. The twins were the youngest of the four children born to Fern and Garland "Cricket" Carter. Kay grew up during a time when money and resources were scarce and she learned to "make do". While most people would see her circumstances as difficult, Kay embraced her situation and developed the determination and resilience that framed her entire life's path. Kay went to college in Mississippi in1959. It was there that she was fixed up on a blind date with a fellow from the air force base. His name was William "Bill" Addie and that was the start of their amazing love story. Six months after their date Kay and Bill were married. At the age of eighteen, Kay left Mississippi for the first time and moved to Bill's hometown in the Bronx, NY. She soon became the wife of a New York City police officer and the mother of three small children; Margaret, John and Raymond. In 1969, Kay and Bill and their young family moved upstate to Washingtonville NY. Kay learned to drive a car at the age of thirty. Kay had a heart to help those whose burdens were too great. Kay's desire to make a difference led her to a job with the Orange County Department of Social Services as a social case worker. In this role Kay helped people navigate social challenges and connect with support services. Kay and Bill and their youngest son Raymond then moved to West Virginia. While she was in West Virginia, Kay continued her pursuit to help those in need. She was awarded a grant that funded a community resource program. She gave tangible relief to her neighbors by teaching life skills to young mothers and facilitating their entry into college. The last leg of Kay's life journey led her back to her roots in Mississippi. Kay maintained her desire to help people. She followed in her daughter's footsteps and went back to college and became a registered nurse. At the age of fifty she started on the night shift as a psychiatric nurse. She continued in this role which she found most fulfilling until she retired fifteen years later. Kay lived out her retirement in Crystal Springs Mississippi with Bill, her husband of 66 years. She spoiled her fur babies Hannah, Bubba, Ellie and Whiskers. She enjoyed her time in her grandma role, never missing a chance to show how proud she was of Ashley, Loren, Samantha, Brittany, Timothy, Derek, Savana, Lizzie and Victor. She also was ever excited to hear updates about her great grandchildren. Kay loved to visit with family and enjoyed celebration vacations. Kay enjoyed planting flowers, reading and having coffee on the deck. Kay was a little lady with a jumbo-sized caring heart. Thank you mom for making us strong, giving us your fighting spirit and teaching us to care for those who are sometimes overlooked. We will miss you greatly! Kay's family would like to especially acknowledge and thank all the caregivers who helped bring her comfort and peace. Visitation will be at 5pm-8pm on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at Stringer Family Funeral Home in Crystal Springs and 10am-11am on Thursday, June 25, 20026, at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, 221E Georgetown St., Crystal Springs MS 39059.
